3 credits
Prerequisite: none
Instructor: Connie Peng
E-mail: pengc@wncc.edu
Meets:
Mondays and Wednesdays 10:00A-12:15P in Aspen 210
Course Description:
Introduces the basic elements of pictorial
organization, and to the practice of using those elements in the production
of art.
Course Objective:
This is an introduction to design. Students
will learn the concepts and application of design elements using various
media. Students will also learn the process from gathering ideas to
finishing more elaborate projects.
Grading:
Your grade is based on your attendance, participation, project, and an essay:
- Attendance and Participation: !!!attendance
is mandatory!!! *4 absences will result
in dropping one whole final grade, and 5 absences will result in failing
the class, no Incomplete will be given in such instances. (Note:
It is students' responsibility to withdraw from a course if he/she
feels the need to drop the course.) Excessive tardiness will affect
one's grade. Don’t be rude by coming in late, but if you
choose to be late, then 3 late/leaving early will count as one absence.
Group critique will take place at the end of each project, this is
a time for students to share their experience and to look at each other’s
work. It is my experience that students learn just as much from
peers as from teachers, your participation is important in the learning
process.
- Projects: your projects will be graded. Each project will graded
based on 0-100 points. Some projects consist of several works. 10
Points will be deducted from each day that the project turned in late. If
you are absent on the due date, turn in the assignment early, or have someone
else turn it in for you to avoid the point deduction (though this will
NOT excuse you from the attendance policy.)
Grade Equivalent:
94-100 = A, 90-93 = A-
87-89= B+, 83-86 = B, 80-82 = B-
77-79 = C+, 73-76 = C, 70-72 = C-
67-69 = D+, 63-66 = D, 60-62 = D-
0-59 = F
To get a passing grade on each project, the work must show comprehension
of the project.
Minimum effort =minimum grade. To get better than passing grade,
you must invest EFFORT and CREATIVITY. Keep in
mind, grade A stands for “absolutely awesome”, not average.
A= Very strong effort, significant creativity. B= Good effort, good
creativity. C= Some effort, Little creativity. D= Minimum effort,
minimum creativity. F= No effort, and zero creativity.
- Homework : Gathering ideas and material will be considered as
your homework. Please have them ready when you walk into the classroom. Project
grades will be lowered if you are not prepared with materials and/or
preliminary sketches. If you have been absent, it is your responsibility
to find out either from the instructor or other students what you will
need for next class.
