Objective:

Painting I - this class will introduce you to the fundamentals of composing a work with paint.  We will explore basic elements in painting, color mixing, color quality, material, composing work with color.
Painting II - This class will further your understanding of what your paint can do for you.  Building on the basic foundation, you will begin to develop a conscious visual thinking and awareness of artistic purpose.

Grading:

Your grade is based on your attendance, participation, portfolio, and homework:

  • Attendance and Participation: Since the understanding and the skills of drawing are a cumulative result of doing the work, attendance is mandatory4 absences will result in dropping one whole final grade, and 5 absences will result in failing the class. It is the student's responsibility to withdraw from a course if he/she feels the need to drop the course.) Excessive tardiness will affect one's grade.  3 late/leaving early will count as one absence.  Brief group critiques will happen periodically, and students are expected to participate in the critique.
  • Midterm review: include all your in-class works up to this point.  A midterm grade will be given.
  • Final portfolio: include all your class projects. It is your responsibility to keep all of your work.  Personal growth and effort are emphasized.  A final individual critique will be given at the end of the semester.  (Both Midterm and Final Reviews will add together as 70% of your final grade.)
  • Homework:
Painting 1: homeworks will be assigned every week and collected at the beginning of the following Monday class.  Homeworks will be drawings and color exercises.  Students are expected to spend minimum 2 hours on each homework assignment.  Homework grades count as 30% of the final grade.  Students are encouraged to keep a journal.
Painting 2: You are expected to keep a journal, minimum one sketch entry per week.  Journal will be collected at Midtern and Final Reviews.

If there are any students in this class who have special needs because of a learning disability or any other kind of disability, please feel free to come and discuss your situation with me.

Painting 2 Assignements (subject to change):

  1. Direct observation – still life.  Set up a Still life of your own.  When you set it up, think about positive and negative space, composition.  Do several compositional studies first.  Pay attention to contrasts, eg., saturation contrasts, hue contrasts, value contrasts.  Also pay attention to paint application.  Try several different ways to apply paint: brush, rag, palette knife, scrape off, etc.  there should also be contrasts of paint applications.
  2. Complex Space – More complex composition using entire interior space.  You may pick a focal point, but work with everything in view.   Think about foreground, middleground, and background.  You may set up a still-life as your forground and the interior furnitures as your middle ground, and the interior structure as your background. Or,  you can do sketches or one or several spaces and paint from you sketches. The Goal of the painting is to keep a unity of complext structure, at the same time develop spatial relationship.  What is the overall atmosphere or exressive quality you wish to convey?  How would you start to go about it?  Are you gonna use representational colors or color relationship that will better convey your expression.  Do you wish the painting to be realistic or a different experience?
  3. Concept Development
  4. Self-direct projects – either work on larger canvas or thematic development of several cavases.  Select a subject matter.  Work out your sketch (unless you’re working with abstraction.)  Try to make it as complicated of space and composition as you can.
