Pictures with my new daughter-in-law and my son at their wedding.

I have been teaching at WNC for twenty-four years and have enjoyed every minute I have spent with my students.

I was born in Saskatchewan, Canada and grew up with three siblings—an older brother and two younger sisters.  When I was seven my  family moved to the United States.  We packed our bags and headed for “the big city of Fallon,” where a great uncle was living.  It was quite a culture shock for this very shy little 3rd grader; going from a small one-room schoolhouse to a larger school with many kids.

When I was in high school, Don Travis, then the Vocational Director who later became the principal, encouraged me to become a teacher.  So after graduation from Churchill County High school I attended the University of Nevada Reno (UNR), becoming the first in my family to attend college.  After two difficult years at UNR, I decided to leave school and go to work for the State Hospital as a medical secretary.  I later became an Assistant Records Librarian for the hospital.

After three years with the hospital I married and moved to “The Lone Star State,” Texas that is, where I attended the University of Houston for a year after joining the Army.  I later joined the Army Reserves and moved back to Reno, Nevada.  The humidity in Texas  was just too much for this "Nevada desert rat."   While in the Army I worked in personnel.  It was very interesting to be one of three girls in a group of about 250 guys.

I went to work for Vocational Rehabilitation after my son was born and began taking classes at UNR once again.   It took  3.5 years to complete my B.S. (Bachelor of Science) in Business Education--but I immediately went on to get my M.Ed. (Masters of Education) in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Adult Education.  After struggling through the first two years of undergraduate studies, I am proud to say that I graduated with a 4.0 G.P.A.  I also became certified to teach Cooperative Education.

During my tenure at WNC I have taught a wide variety of classes, beginning with office skills classes--then on to computer applications--and now primarily in business and management.  My areas of concentration include business communication and writing, business math and finance, human relations and management.  My "pet project"--the newly developed area of customer service.

The loves of my life--my “wonderful” son, John, who now lives in Denver--attending the University of Denver working on his Master's degree in library technology.  I was blessed with an equally "wonderful" daughter-in-law on July 7, 2007, and she too is attending graduate school in the same field.  When I am not teaching, you will probably find me in my garden digging in the dirt and caring for my flowers--primarily roses, all 150 of them.  I also enjoy spending time with my son and his wife whenever possible and I take short trips to visit my sister who lives in Auburn, California.  In quieter times I enjoy "tickling the ivories" of my concert organ, which I play for her own enjoyment.  I also consider myself to be a professional—shopper--the main activity when I visit with my sister.

What do I like about teaching--"I love students; they are my motivational factor.  I would like to think I have inspired some students just as I was inspired in high school by Mr. Travis who took the time to notice my potential.  Because of him, I try to encourage students who otherwise are overlooked."

Some words of wisdom--“It’s never too late to learn, the time passes anyway.”
