TEXTBOOK:   Technical Writing Process and Product

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

At the completion of this course student should be able to:

bullet Plan and complete written messages that express ideas in precise sentences.
bullet Prepare letters, memorandums, and business reports in proper format.
bullet Effectively construct grammatically correct sentences.

METHODOLOGY:

Students will have an opportunity to assess and address various types of readers and situations. Some of the situations will include requesting routine information, responding to problem letters, saying "no" tactfully, responding to customer requests, composing public relations letters.

Through development of a planning guide, students will learn a planning process to identify main topics and tone of a business communication prior to beginning the actual writing process.

Proper format for letters, memorandums, reports and other business communications will be presented.

Throughout the course various grammar topics will be presented and reviewed to provide students with an opportunity to write more effective communications.

A written business report will be required as part of this course. Topics will be related to pertinent business subjects.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Student is responsible for all assigned readings and written assignments on the days on which they are due and for all lecture and discussion material. Class participation will be a critical factor in successful completion of this course. Therefore, attendance is important. More than three missed classes will result in a letter grade reduction.

Instructor reserves the right to a 5% adjustment based on effort, attendance, and improvement.

CLASS PROCEDURE:

Chapter with accompanying workbook assignment is assigned for the following week.

-During classes of the following week, we will review the assigned chapter, complete various end-of-the chapter exercises in class, and review various workbook assignments.

-Assignments are due within two weeks of the assigned date unless otherwise indicated. ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE TURNED IN ON THE DUE DATE. LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

STUDENT WILL BE REQUIRED TO:

bullet Read the assigned textbook assignments.
bullet Complete the assignments in the workbook and/or text as assigned.
bullet Be prepared to discuss the material during the next class.
bullet Write down questions about difficult assignments for class discussion.
