Research Paper

Students are required to complete a research paper in business memorandum format based on a Management topic, approximately 2‑4 pages in length.  The topic will be chosen by student and approved by instructor.  Primarily resource for this paper will be on business-oriented articles. Each paper will be posted as a discussion topic.  Students will be required to discuss each report as part of discussion assignments.

Academic Integrity Policies & Procedures as set forth by in the University and Community College System of Nevada Code will be observed in this class.  Students at WNC are expected to be honest and forthright in their academic endeavors because academic dishonesty disrupts the learning process and threatens the educational environment for all students. Academic dishonesty is any form of cheating and plagiarism which results in students giving or receiving unauthorized assistance in an academic exercise or receiving credit for work which is not their own. Academic dishonesty will result in an “F” grade being issued.

GRADING POLICY:

“W” Grades:

As indicated below, grades are assigned based on the A to F scale. I do not routinely issue “W” grades!

·         If unable to complete the class or are not earning the desired grade, withdrawal from the class is possible until the Friday before Finals Week.  Grade would then become a “W.”

·         I assign “W” grades ONLY on request.  A student may request a “W” grade as an alternative grade.  This request must be e-mailed before midnight on the last day of the scheduled final exam.

o   For Example:  “If I earn lower than a “C,” please issue a “W.”

Final grades will be assigned according to the following scale:

INCOMPLETE POLICY:

Incompletes are given at the discretion of instructor.  Student must have completed approximately 75% of the class assignments, have extenuating circumstances, and complete the appropriate form. Incompletes require a written request form and must be completed before finals week.

OVERVIEW OF CLASS PROCEDURES &

SUGGESTIONS FOR SUCCESS:

(Specific assignments will be listed in Chapter assignments Icon on the Home Page.)

·         A Typical Week

·         A Weekly Icon will appear on the home MGT201 page.  Icon for the upcoming week will always be available by Saturday, allowing ample time to complete the assignments.  Icon will provide chapter procedures for the week which will include:

  1. Assignments:  Chapter assignments will each have a “point value,” along with an area to submit your assignment.  You will also see a place where you can attach a “Word” document if you prefer an attachment to typing in the assignment box.
  2. Discussions:  In addition to written assignments, you will have Discussion assignments, which will also have a point value.  For every Discussion question there are two requirements:  (1) answer the discussion question, and (2) respond to other student postings.  Discussion infers “two-way” conversation.  Don’t just read postings—answer them.   Make sure you read the chapter and are prepared to participate in discussion board interaction.  Your discussion question grade will be based on the quantity and quality of your participation. Check the discussion/bulletin board regularly.  This media serves as classroom participation and interaction.  Along with homework assignments, it is 50% of final grade. In addition to the assigned discussion, you are also encouraged to post any questions, insights, comments, or observations.

3.     Archive Questions:  Weekly lectures will be available via Horizon Wimba.  During these lectures I will overview the chapter and expand on the material.  This lecture will be similar to a classroom lecture (jokes and all).  Horizon may be viewed at any time and typically will be between 1 and 1.5 hours long.  You may view the entire lecture at one time or you view parts of it.  You will also be able to view any section.  In other words, it is not a sequential-type of media.
Students are required to view the archive, answer the questions that are asked and submit for grading.  As with chapter assignments, there will be an area to respond to archive questions and/or attach a word document.

4.     Horizon icon:  You will click on the Horizon icon to access both “office hour”  and “archive” viewing.  The first time you access this Icon, click on the Setup Wizard and follow the instructions.  THIS IS CRITICAL—don’t wait until the last minute.  Setup your computer at least 48 hours before you plan to use Horizon.  I would highly recommend that you purchase a headset/microphone combination for chat.  This will enable you to talk instead of type—which is a huge advantage.  The cost is low, the return is high.

  1. Quizzes Chapter quizzes will be part of chapter homework assignment and points earned will be recorded as homework.  Five attempts are allowed—all scores will be averaged for the final quiz grade.  Quizzes earn 10 points.

·         Office hour:  To be announced. During this hour I will be available to answer any questions you may have about chapter material and answer questions.  Office hour IS NOT mandatory, but rather an optional feature.  Although I would like to require participation, the nature of on-line students makes it extremely difficult to set a time that is convenient for the majority of the students. on.

·         Homework Due Dates:  all weekly assignments are due by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday night.  Late Assignments earn half credit and are accepted until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday night.  (Exceptions:  Week #1 assignments won’t be due for two weeks.   Other exceptions will be noted in the appropriate Weekly Icon.)  Due dates will be noted in the Weekly Assignment Icon chapter procedures and on the calendar. (below)

·         Calendar:  Your Home Page will have a “Calendar” which will provide valuable tracking information for you.  Click on it regularly to see when assignments are due.  This is an additional tool for you.

·         Exams:  Exams will be given for every chapter, many will be proctored.  The first exams (Chapter 1-4) will be open book which will introduce students to the test format for the future exams.  Exams will be scheduled to cover the following chapters:

·

o    Exam #1—covers chapters 1, 2, 3, 4 (open book at home)

o    Exam #2—covers chapters  5, 6, 7

o    Exam #3—covers  chapters   8, 9

o    Exam #4--covers chapters  10¸ 11, 12

o    Exam #5—covers chapter 13, 14

 ·      Exams Questions will contain objective questions (multiple choice) and subjective questions (case study and short answer).

·         Exam Information: I know many of you will question the rationale of frequency and proctoring of exams.  I know that many students take on-line class as an option to the traditional college classroom.

 ·          “Why proctored?”—you might ask.  As a long-time tenured WNC professor, I value our high standards and credibility in the academic world.  With the growth of web classes being offered through many different sources, I must maintain this credibility.  I must be able to say, for example, (via my final grade sheets) that I am attesting that JOHN SMITH took MGT 201 and earned a B.  Without proctored exams which verify identify, I would not be able to verify the information.

·         “Okay, I can buy that, But Why FIVE?”—you might ask.   This question was much tougher for me to assess.  Business theory is not “easy reading.”  It is very intensive material.  My first option —a mid-term and a final, which would each cover approximately seven chapters--is too much information for students to manage effectively in one exam.   Therefore, I decided to have four exams which is the method I use in the traditional classroom.  Although coming to a testing center several times can be inconvenient, past students have agreed this was the best option.

·         I may point out that you can take all of the assigned chapters for the assigned exam at one time which will require only one trip to the testing center OR you may chose to appear more than once, taking one chapter exam at a time which will allow you to study for one chapter at a time. I will be providing an Essay Question study guide for each chapter so that will be very beneficial to you.

·         “Tell me about the Exam?”—Each chapter will be a different exam and will include 15 multiple choice questions and 3 essay questions.  You will receive random questions.  Exam #1 will cover chapters 1-4. This will be your open book exam and will allow you an opportunity to experience the testing style.  After you have an opportunity to review the results of your Exam #1 you will have a template for exam-taking success.

·         That about covers the basic information you will need to get started.  As you get familiar with the class, more information will be provided.  You need to explore the Home Page and become familiar with the features.  Check out the mail, the calendar, and all the tools.  If you have any problems, contact me via MGT web mail or regular e-mail addresses I have given above.
