Linkage of course to educational program mission and outcomes: SPAN 101B is the first of a four-course sequence designed for students who wish to learn the Spanish language. Courses with a “B” designator after the number are college level courses which may apply toward a WNCC degree but which may not transfer to UNR or UNLV. In some cases, these courses may transfer to other Nevada community colleges and NSC or to out-or-state college and universities. See a WNCC counselor the latest transfer information.

Course Description

Emphasizes spoken communication. Listening skills, reading and writing skills will be explored. A vocabulary of Spanish-English words can be developed to suit student needs. As students progress through this four-semester sequence they will build increasing fluency in the speaking, reading and writing of  Spanish.

 

Course Objectives

Spanish 101B the first semester of the four-semester sequence, is designed to help students acquire beginning communication skills within a culturally significant context. Upon completion of this course, students are expected to:

 

A.                 Be able to communicate orally using basic Spanish to ask and answer questions using high-frequency vocabulary and basic grammar.

B.                 Be able to understand some Spanish spoken slower than normal pace and develop       skills and coping strategies for filling in the gaps.

D.        Gain cultural knowledge and awareness about the areas of the world in which Spanish                    is spoken.

Grading

Your grade for the course will be determined in the following manner:

 

4 written tests                                                    30%                             

1 final exam (comprehensive)                              20%

             3 in-class presentations                                      30%

                   *   1 exit interview                                                  15%

                        Class preparation, participation, effort                     5%

 

*A student must pass the exit interview with 65 or better to pass the course

*The grade of F will be assigned only if a student is failing the class at the time of withdrawal and does not officially withdraw from the course. A student may officially withdraw from the class through December 9, 2005. If a student fails to officially withdraw from the course and has a passing grade at the time, the student will receive a W (withdrawal) for the course.

 

Classroom

The two preliminary lessons and Lessons 1-5 of the text will be covered. In addition to completing the exercises in your book, you will be assigned homework, which will be corrected and returned to you on a regular basis or it will be corrected in class. Late homework will not be accepted. In the case of absence, it is your responsibility to find out from another student what was covered, what the homework is, and what will be expected of you on your return. If you cannot contact a classmate, please call/e-mail me. Please note that 50% of your final grade is the result of oral work including in-class presentations, interview, class preparation (homework), participation, and effort (willingness to try and speak Spanish).

 

Tests

Dates of tests are indicated on this syllabus. There will be no makeup tests without prior consent.

 

Oral work

Dates of oral presentations and the interview are indicated on this syllabus. Topics for presentations as well as study guides for the interview will be handed out two weeks before due dates.

 

Participation and Attendance

Regular practice is an essential part of language learning. Regular exposure to a language is very important and every effort should be made to attend each class. Your participation in class includes being prepared when called on, turning in assignments on time, listening to the audiotapes/cds regularly, doing the exercises in the book, and coming in for extra help when you need it. In the case of serious illness or emergency, of course, get in touch with me as soon as possible In order to make arrangements concerning work missed. Finally, you will be held responsible for the information on this syllabus throughout the semester.
