Important Information
about
Spanish 111 and 112 Web Courses
Max Cirac's Home Page
Western offers two transferable first-year Spanish courses taught entirely
on the Web: SPAN 111 and SPAN 112. These courses respectively fulfill the
first year of the two-year foreign language requirement at most institutions
(including UNR and UNLV). There are no prerequisites for SPAN 111, and SPAN
112 requires completion of SPAN 111, its equivalent or consent of instructor.
Whether or not you’ve taken an online college course,
please bear in mind that foreign language courses are particularly demanding.
As SPAN 111 and 112 are each 4-credit courses, you can expect to spend 10-12
hours per week studying, completing homework assignments and participating
in audio chat sessions using a tool called Horizon
Live Classroom.
Please read the syllabus and
think very carefully about your commitments before enrolling in the course.
A good way to assess your readiness and prepare for the course is to complete
WNC's Online
Learning Tutorial. Also, be sure that you have access to a computer that
meets the minimum hardware
and software requirements.
Here are some important dates for the beginning of the Fall 2007 semester:
Friday, August 24
Last day to pay for full-term fall classes with no late fee; unpaid students
may be removed from class rosters
Saturday, August 25
Late registration begins with late fee for full-term classes; Class availability
limited
Sunday, August 26
Last day for 100%
refund for full-term classes
Monday, August 27
Fall semester begins; 90%
refund period begins for full-term classes (OEOE classes excluded from 90%
refund); classes dropped receive a "W"; even exchange of credits
for drop/add begins
Friday, August 31
Last day for 90% refund for full-term
classes. Last day to add full-term classes via Web-REG.
Last day to pay for classes with a late fee. Unpaid students may be removed
from class rosters
As you can see above, the last day for a 90% refund is Friday of the
FIRST WEEK of the semester!
If you decide you’re up for the challenge, register for the course,
purchase the materials (text and a special code for the online manual through Quia)
and access CE6.
After you register for the course, it can take as long as 24-48 hours until
you are able to access the course. As soon as you are allowed access—generally
about a week before the semester begins—begin to familiarize yourself
with the course by reading the syllabus and the GETTING STARTED page. You
will need to register on the Quia Web site using the access code you have
purchased, and you will also need to run a set-up program on your computer
to enable you to use Horizon Live Classroom. Everything you need to know
to accomplish these things can be found in the course once you are in CE6.
