COM113. Fundamentals of Speech Communications.
Updated 05/15/09

There is no text for this class. If you wish to refer to a text on public speaking there are some of my old text books in the library that you can borrow for the semester. I do this because effective public speaking is a PERFORMANCE "art" and as such you will learn more in this class by listening to what I have to say and watching what I do than you can from a book. A text can tell you what to do but not HOW to do it. In 45 years of competitive speaking and teaching I have not found a text that is as valuable as your own observation and practice of demonstrated behaviors.

Having said that, however, I am slowly putting together a "textbook" that closely parallels information I talk about in class. I have done this to provide you, my students, with a tangible reference to my lectures while saving my old body from the possible strains caused by lugging around the excess weight of handouts. These notes are in Adobe’s PDF format (.pdf means portable document format). On the off-chance that you do not have Adobe’s "free" PDF reader, you can download one from Adobe’s PDF Reader Download Page.

Most WNC computers either in the Libraries or the Learning Centers, or the computer labs, have the Adobe Reader.

When you have a computer with the Adobe Reader, just click on the links below to read and/or print my lecture notes.
